Woganurra Aboriginal Corporation
Preserving and revitalising local Aboriginal languages and culture through the family-run Goondee Aboriginal Keeping Place and community education.
Built on the legacy of Elders Aunty June and Uncle Roy Barker, Woganurra Aboriginal Corporation integrates family knowledge, kinship and truth-telling across programs centred on the Goondee Aboriginal Keeping Place in Lightning Ridge. The organisation serves Yuwaalaraay, Gamilaraay, Yuwaaliyaay, Murrawarri and Gomeroi communities by safeguarding collections, sharing history and delivering education that fosters pride, intergenerational knowledge transfer and language revitalisation. Through museum stewardship and outreach across regional towns, Woganurra deepens understanding of Aboriginal experiences for both Aboriginal and broader audiences, strengthening cultural sovereignty for future generations.
2025 Pitch
Funds Raised: $77,310
Pitched for support to enable the essential refurbishment of the Goondee in Lightning Ridge - so it is climate-resilient, functional across all seasons and fit for growing demand from local families, schools and tourists. Upgrades will protect precious collections, expand language revitalisation and truth-telling programs, and create employment and training opportunities, particularly for young people. With visitor numbers to the region rising, the Goondee is uniquely placed to share authentic culture and history while strengthening self-determination through community-led programs across the Yuwaalaraay, Gamilaraay, Yuwaaliyaay, Murrawarri and Gomeroi communities.
