Roots of Change is a storytelling platform dedicated to the Alumni community of The Funding Network Australia. Here we share their stories of ingenuity, courage, determination, spirit, growth and the impact these grassroots organisations have had, as a direct result of funds and support received from The Funding Network community.

Using bicycles to create meaningful and lasting employment and social opportunities for people and communities in need.

Good Rides is a group bicycle riding program that brings people together (such as refugees, disengaged youth, people with disabilities and others) and provides opportunities to safely explore Melbourne by bicycle. Led by expert guides and volunteers, the community is connected via the humble bicycle.

2014 Pitch
Funds raised: $13,400

Good Cycles pitched at a Melbourne TFN event in December 2014 with the funds raised going towards purchasing quality bicycles to be used as part of the organisation’s Good Rides program. The program allows people of all ages and abilities to participate in community rides around Melbourne. The rides create confidence on the roads, enable regular physical activity and create a sense of belonging to the wider community. “Bikes can change lives,” says Loretta Curtin. Loretta’s organisation, Good Cycles, is creating change with a turn of the wheel.

The impact...

Since receiving funding from The Funding Network, 114 people from disadvantaged backgrounds participated in Good Cycles bicycle education and employment pathway programs; the organisation employed eight new people; and it doubled its revenue. During this time, Good Cycles directly delivered support to communities including asylum seekers, young people, girls and women, schools that work with students from low socio-economic backgrounds and public housing residents.
