Code Like a Girl seeks to close the gender gap in technology; inspiring new generations of girls to acquire coding as a skill through coding camps, internships and events.

Code Like a Girl was founded on the belief that we need diversity of experiences, perspectives and stories to build a world that is more empathetic, innovative and equal. By fostering innovative learning environments, girls from all backgrounds are given the chance to feel included, inspired and capable in the world of technology.

2019 Pitch

Funds Raised: $35,400

Code Like a Girl was established to close the gender gap in technology, running coding camps and tech events for young girls to ensure that the future of tech is made by everybody, for everybody. Ally pitched for funds at TFN Live Melbourne for hardware kits for these camps, which would include computers, iPads and robots.

The impact…

Technology has become one of the most powerful wealth generators on the planet and is a core component of not just our workplaces, but every facet of our lives. Coding is now one of the most sought after skill sets in the world, but currently there is a shortage of qualified computer scientists. So why is it that only 3% of schoolgirls consider it as a career choice? Code Like a Girl operate on the belief that the attitudes and stereotypes formed in a child's early life play a major role, with boys more likely to be given gadgets and girls getting Barbies instead.

Pitching at TFN Live Melbourne, Ally aimed to raise funds for equipment to run 3-day coding camps for girls to challenge these misconceptions and inspire a generation of girls to see IT as a fun and rewarding career. Since the event, they have run over 20 camps and have had a significant impact on the attitudes of their campers.

Of the 346 girls who attended these camps:

  • 82% said they felt more confident in technology and coding after attending

  • 60% said that they would now like to pursue coding as a career

  • 97% would like to return to another camp

  • 92% would like to learn further coding skills at school

Below is a testimonial from one of the parents:

“Amelia is a student who came to Code Like a Girl for the very first time. She has always had an "I can do that" approach to most things and Code Like a Girl has allowed her to prove she can do it in the technology space too, something she never considered before. Amelia left camp feeling a new found enthusiasm for coding and is looking forward to returning to another camp during the next school holidays.” - Ally Watson, Founder
